Jeff Fisher, The Savvy Designer's Guide To Success

Bought this book recently while browsing the design section at Border’s (Oahu) on Thanksgiving break.

So what was different about this book? Well, the tone of the book was very personable, and upon further reading, the information was very relevant to my situation now, as a designer still moving up in the field.

I just wish I had this book earlier. Everybody serious about working in the design field needs a mentor to turn to. Unfortunately I never had one, but while reading this book, it felt as if Jeff Fisher (author of this book and experienced designer) was my mentor, sharing with me the complicated ins-and-outs of the design field.

Highly recommended!

Happy Thanksgiving!

For the past few years, I have spent my thanksgiving with my girlfriend’s family. Her family is big on food and it was really hard for me to find something to bring to the table. The first year I was there I offered to make the mashed potatoes. It was a big hit and it has become a tradition for me to make it each year. This year I decided to share my recipe with you all.

Cooling down after memory lane…
November 23, 2006, posted by Kevin in Food, Hawaii

Anyways, all this walking on campus during the hot day made me want to cool off with something cold… and what better way is there than to indulge in a frosty ice cream…So I decided to take a trip down to Hilo Homemade Ice Cream in Keaukaha with my girlfriend Stacy…Inspired by James’ Big Island Grinds Food Blog, I’m going to attempt to express my experience there…

Hilo Homemade

In my opinion, I believe they make one of the best Ice Creams in Hawaii! Hilo Homemade Ice Cream emphasizes in using the freshest in Hawaii grown products and will definitely please anyones flavor palate.

A walk down memory lane…

It was a beautiful day out in Hilo town, so I thought it might be a great opportunity to check out my old stomping ground where I ended up getting my college education and also where I first met my fellow techy3 parthers! Here’s a quick recap of where I spent some of my most exciting and memorable years…

As you might already know, I attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo where I ended up earning my degree…I really believe that they stand by their mission: To offer excellent undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in an extraordinary natural and cultural environment.

Homemade Softbox
with some help from Samuel Adams

November 16, 2006, posted by James in Food, Photography

Strobist has an excellent tutorial on how to make your own softbox from an ordinary cardboard box. I made one myself following Strobist’s instructions, though there was no available box lying around the house to use… until I found my buddy Samuel Adams near the fridge. He never lets me down!

Samuel Adams Boston Lager rocks

So, I emptied the half-full case of Samuel Adams, cut open the sides and the top, taped on some tissue paper, and there you have it: a beautiful lookin’ softbox!

Now, all you need is some white posterboard to slide in and up the back of the box to put your object inside… then a household lamp to light it up. (see the Strobist tutorial for more details)

My breakfast in the softbox

And there is my breakfast! Looking extra good because of the flattering light. Oh how lucky you are Mr. Breakfast Sandwich… ermm…

Well, I’ll probably be using this softbox a lot on my food blog Big Island Grinds when I can.

Punalu`u Black Sand Beach
November 14, 2006, posted by James in Hawaii, Scenery

The Big Island of Hawaii has beautiful black sand beaches, and Punalu’u, located on the south side of the Island, has one of the more accessible ones with great camping facilities. So, taking advantage of the recent long weekend and to celebrate our 4 years together, Bev and I went camping. Here are some photos.

Aloha and welcome to our little blog! What will we be writing about? Well, I’m really not sure yet. Personally, I will try to stick to design topics, food, and the exciting life of living in the beautiful town of Hilo, Hawaii.

Also, be sure to check out our first TV Ad on OC16, airing on the new (and excellent) show Kama’aina Backroads this Saturday 9pm and various times throughout the coming week. Times like this are very exciting for Techy3, as we are just starting up and still gaining exposure.

Oh, did I forget to introduce myself? My name is James Rubio, and I’m the web geek of the Techy3 group. It’s good times working with my two buddies Patrick Jenkins and Kevin Fujitani.

Thanks for visiting!

Aloha!
